thats-not-victorian answered:
Well, yes, Aestheticism is Victorian, so I haven’t really addressed it, but I guess what I’m getting at is the style of this [x]

shouldn’t be confused with this [x]

because they both resemble this [x]

which is what I think happens sometimes (and also “Victorian” apparently has come to mean anything “old” somehow).
But, the Aesthetic Movement really is gorgeous and anyone not familiar with it should most certainly look into it.
Artistic Style theft is not ok…
Please don’t do it? It’s great that you love someone’s style but copying it to produce your own art is not okay! ;~; Please don’t do it, it’s very hurtful.
It’s great to learn from your fellow artists! But copying the way they do things is not okay, it’s not a compliment.
Style is such a personal thing to take, to replicate, and when people start mistaking art because they look so similar? It’s a terrible feeling, like a part of your your identity has been stripped away.
I’ve seen this happen to a few of my friends and it’s so upsetting. Please don’t do it!
I honestly don’t agree with this. I understand that this frustration, and it’s certainly one echoed by a lot of artists, but the thing about style is that it’s not as definable as and image or idea (this incidentally is why you cannot copyright a style). The truth is we’re all copying each other’s styles. You remember a few years ago when noodle limbs became a a popular style, and everyone was doing it? They were all copying, probably most of them from adventure time. Adventure probably copied their style from another artist.
With all due respect, Daunt, there are several artists around the web that share a similar style to you, and surely there are artists who heavily influenced you. I am heavily influenced by John Tenniel. My art style has turned out that way it has because at an early point in my development I literally sat down and copied his pieces. I wouldn’t try to pass his work off as my own, but it helped me learn. I didn’t take anything from him. His work is still there. I can name hundreds of other artists who I’ve borrowed from in one way or another. I don’t think a single one of us is truly unique in the way that we draw.
Companies even have a ‘house style’. You may literally be required to work in a certain style as part of your job. My arts uni encouraged a ‘naive’ style. It’s fashionable right now. There are art style fashions.
My advice for young artists however, would be to allow yourself to be influenced by a wide range of sources, and more that anything allow yourself to be influenced by the real world. You can copy a single artist’s style, but if you do so you’re limiting yourself. Your style ought to be a reflection of you, not a copy of someone else.
Acceptable fashion advice:
-those two colors don’t look good together, pick a neutral colored bottom
-those shoes and that dress? nahhhh try something different like these shoes
-you should really try combining that shirt with this style of makeup it’ll look bomb!!
Unacceptable fashion advice
-you don’t have the body to wear x piece of clothing
-you must keep your helmet on in space
-you should cover up more bc boys are gonna stare
